Volunteers Biographies Caryn Majeskie, Founder Caryn got this brilliant idea to head to the gulf coast just days after Katrina hit. She decided to fill up her van with as many supplies as she could fit. After sending out an email to her friends and family asking if anyone wanted to make donations, not only was the van beyond full but she had to get a larger vehicle and more volunteers. So....that is how OBAH was born! Caryn is married and the mother of 4 children, 2 dogs and 2 cats (although that tends to change often)! Operating a animal rescue has been her dream since she was a child, however she never thought it would be a search and rescue team. It was obvious how much we needed it. Dana Deutsch, Rescuer Dana made every single trip to the gulf coast following Katrina that OBAH made. She was our rock of rescue. Dana was a firefighter in Houston, TX as well as a personal trainer focusing on power lifting. She now lives in IL and continues her daily rescue work at Save-a-Pet in Grayslake, IL as well as doing transports for us until we very patiently wait for the next disaster. Dana was commended by SAP for all the rescue she did during Katrina....she was truly a fixture in NOLA. Not only did she rescue in the field, but she fostered so many animals I've lost count. No kidding! She had 3 litters of puppies born at her home, chasing beagles on their infamous runs and still has the time to be mom to her furry babies. Please check out her website with photos of our many, many rescue trips. |
I watched the special last night on PBS. I always turned the channel when they showed the animals before - just like I always do, it's always been too much for me to see them suffering. I cried through the entire show. It made me realize what you all have really been through. I know how hard it was on me to hear all of you on the calls every day, knowing I couldn't do everything that needed to be done, knowing that no matter what I did there were still animals that were going to starve and die a horrible death. I know how hard I had to try to stay focused on whatever needed to be done so that I wouldn't fall part. When I saw the white dog the owner came back to rescue, almost dead from starvation, my heart just broke. I don't know how all of you did it. You were all dealing with everything I was and on top of it all, seeing those animals day after day, one after another. I can't tell you how much I admire all of you and how grateful I am that you were all able to go and do what needed to be done. You are all heroes and the world is a better place because people like you are in it. With gratitude and respect, Dorothy Caryn, This is why I stick around your rescue. You TAKE CARE of the animals. Too many rescues "remove" the problem rather than fix it. THIS IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT!! OBAH is truely a "rescue" to these animals. You do good things! Dee Just wanted to let you know how well Sam is doing. First he had a bath when we got home, I think Bob and I got as wet as Sam!!!!! Not to terribly excited about baths!!!!!. He and Maddie were chasing each other around the house,it was so cute. He has learned from us that he now has a cozy couch to lay on while watching TV and thinks that is pretty darn cool! He and Maddie slept in our bed all night - he is just the greatest!.. I just wanted to tell you both what an incredible experience this has been you are amazing, on behalf of all the animals you save, thanks for the work you do... We are here to help just let us know what you need! Love from - Sam, Maddie, Susie and Bob End of the Leash 262-363-3338 Have a safe trip Caryn and keep up your good work.
